About the Reserve

Discover the beauty and history of Banghoek, a serene and rare gem in the Cape Fynbos Biome. In 1996, it was referred to as "one of the most desirable properties on the West Coast". Explore the ancient valley where hunter gatherers lived 3000 years ago and take in the breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna, including several rare and endangered plant species.

The reserve is also home to many animals and a variety of birds. Marvel at the remnants of the wide river that once flowed through the valley and carved out the Banghoek valley, now marked by the white river sand and rounded rocks. Travel up the old 16th-century road, still in use today, and visit Dassies Klip, a large rock marking a sharp bend in the road.

Early Piquetberg Farms

Between 1848 and 1849, the painter Johannes Cornelius Poortermans spent two years in the Banghoek valley, capturing its beauty in his paintings. He recorded the unique vernacular architecture of the era, capturing the essence of Banghoek and other Kapteinskloof farms in his works. His painting, "The Estate Banghoek, situated in the Piquet Mountains" is displayed in the Africana Museum in Johannesburg and showcases the farmhouse, wagon, oxen, and cultivated fields.
